cis people

I’m sorry deli.sub, but I find this slightly offensive since I’m cisgendered. I’m sure that you have a good reason for feeling this way (and as I scroll down, I’ll probably find it), but that doesn’t mean that reading this post and the accompanying tag isn’t hurtful, especially when it comes from one of my favourite queer bloggers. :(

It’s not really your (or mine cuz I’m cis) place to be offended. It’s a matter of privilege here. There are some really shitty transphobic cis people out tonight spewing all their shitty cissexism all over the place. It’s perfectly reasonable for trans* people to say that they hate cis people just like it’s reasonable for women to say they hate men or POC to say they hate white people. I like you, Wynneisms, but it’s really a time to check your privilege.

Hugs for Emerald!

And for wynneisms

LOL

cis people.

I have so much more justifiable angry things I could say about cis people right now, and you seriously want to get on my case for coping with that rage and pain by saying “LOL cis people”?

Howsabouts when you’re done eradicating cissexism you can come back to me and we can have a conversation about it.  As long as cissexism  (in conjunction with racism, heterosexism, ableism, and so much more) still structures the world I live in, I will continue to LOL @ cis people and cis people can continue to get the fuck over it.

I’m torn on this. On the one hand laughing at a joke is not a serious matter and the offensiveness of it is pathetically small compared to the offensiveness of cissexism, racism, heterosexism, ableism etc.

On the other hand, the idea that a group - because of their privilege or ignorance - is in any way collectively bad, is a harmful thing. It perpetuates the idea that there are no good well-informed cis people, while there are.

Laughing at ‘silly cispeople’ for once is not such a bad thing, but I wouldn’t take that attitude with me in the world or in my activism. A negative attitude towards people for their privilege alone shuts down dialogue, alienates allies and makes it more difficult to recognise the real cissexists.

(I myself am trans*, but people who only value my opinion after reading that should get the f*ck off my blog. My opinions are good or bad depending on their content, not on what privileges I have and do not have.)
